As part of the healthcare team, the Intermediate Care Tech – Military Medics and Corpsmen Program performs technical clinical services related to the care, cleanliness, safety and comfort for patients of all ages. Provides quality services through a team-oriented, collaborative approach to patient care. This position is responsible for the support of wound care and the mass blood transfusion process as well as draw blood, insert IV’s, behavioral and psychiatric situations, Foley insertion, cardiac monitoring, patient transportation, and assistance with bedside procedures. Assists nursing and Physicians with complex, specialized, and potentially life threatening procedures such as defibrillation, cardioversions, insertion of check drainage tubes, or initiation of mechanical ventilation. Will also assist during Code Blues and Rapid Responses. The incumbent must independently recognize life threatening situations and act to correct these according to established national and facility protocols.

The incumbent supports and assists with a wide range of patient conditions. The purpose of the work is to provide efficient support with patient care, patient handling, and patient transport in accordance with protocols. The work effects patient recovery and contributes to their physical and emotional well-being. May be required to support multiple nursing units. Work is performed in patient care environment and is often fast-paced, requiring use of prioritization skills. Interacts with unit staff, patients, physicians, families, visitors, management, ancillary departments, and the general public. Maintains patient, staff and customer confidentiality. If assigned to perform patient care tasks, must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development through the life span, possess the ability to recognize and report data reflective of the patient’s status, interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age and specific needs, and provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures. May be required to sit with patients on suicide precautions. May be exposed to infectious diseases, biohazardous and hazardous materials, including regulated medical wastes, and combative patients. Prolonged periods of sitting, visualizing computer screen and using keyboard. May be required to work at multiple Carilion facilities.
