About
MSV's (Medical Society of Virginia) purpose is to support Virginia physicians. The Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) is your professional association that serves as the voice for more than 30,000 physicians, residents, medical students, PAs, and PA students in all regions of the Commonwealth. Our core purpose is to support Virginia physicians, PAs, and the entire healthcare team in the practice of medicine, regardless of specialty, employment arrangements, or practice setting.

Membership Categories
MSV members can join a number of membership categories:
  • Physician Membership: In order to hold membership in the MSV, you must be a doctor of medicine (M.D.) or doctor of osteopathy (D.O.) with an active Virginia medical license. Active members of MSV are voting members that may hold office in the MSV and serve on committees
  • Resident/Fellow/Intern: A resident physician member must be an intern, resident or fellow in an approved training program in Virginia. Once a resident physician joins the MSV, his/her membership is active until the completion of their program. Resident physician membership is terminated automatically when the member completes their training program.
  • Student MSV Dues: A student member must attend one of the six medical schools in Virginia with an active MSV chapter (EVMS, LUCOM, VCU, UVA, VCOM, VTC).
  • PA Member: Physician assistants must hold an active PA license from the Virginia Board of Medicine. As affiliate members of MSV, Physician Assistants shall not vote or hold office but shall be entitled to all other privileges of membership including serving on committees or task forces.
  • PA Students: A full-time student in a Virginia program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

MSV Medical Students
The Medical Society of Virginia’s (MSV) Medical Student Section (MSS) was established in 1997 to serve as a unified voice for students in state and national affairs. The MSS is represented by a Governing Council (GC), which represents six medical schools in Virginia.

The MSS participates at the local, state, and national levels. Involvement is attainable through school chapter opportunities, serving on the GC, and nationally through the American Medical Association (AMA-MSS), allowing students a first-hand look at how important physician involvement is to the future of health care.

The purpose of the MSV-MSS is to inspire medical citizenship and thus create a long-term commitment to medicine through engagement, awareness and involvement of medical student members.
