The Virginia Department of Health Professions (DHP) places the highest priority on the health, safety and well-being of the Commonwealth’s eight million citizens. DHP’s mission is to ensure safe and competent patient care by licensing health professionals, enforcing standards of practice, and providing information to healthcare practitioners and the public. The agency’s 13 health regulatory boards issue over 380,000 licenses across 62 professions.

The agency’s Enforcement Division receives complaints and conducts investigations about alleged misconduct by healthcare practitioners and regulated facilities, including pharmacies, veterinary establishments and funeral establishments, and conducts inspections of facilities under the authority of DHP.

• DHP has jurisdiction over facilities regulated by the Boards of Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine and Funeral Directors and Embalmers. DHP does not have jurisdiction over any other type of healthcare facility.
• Complaints against a hospital, nursing facility, hospice or homecare agency should be made to the Office of Licensure and Certification.
• Complaints against an assisted living facility should be made to the Department of Social Services.
• Complaints against a licensed mental health or substance abuse treatment program should be made to the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.
• Please note health regulatory boards do not have the authority to require a licensee to return money or provide other personal remedies.
